To the Japanese, both ancient and modern, the peony flower is a powerful symbol of nobility and value, as well as the ideals of fortune and wealth, which were shared with the Chinese culture. Likewise, the peony was a symbol of protection, and some Japanese got a peony tattoo, believing that the symbol was able to protect them from evil spirits.
